The theory of art history, as a comprehensive and profound perspective, delves into the examination and interpretation of artistic works through the lenses of culture, history, society, and philosophy, thereby shedding light on various aspects of these works. This theory draws upon sociological, historical, cultural, and even philosophical insights in its quest to uncover the depth and multi-layered nature of artistic creations.
The forthcoming research aims to provide a critique, adhering to appropriate rules, of the book "Theory for Art History" by Jae Emerling, translated by Farideh Afrin. This book serves as a comprehensive and worthy guide to exploring and analyzing the concepts and foundations of this pervasive field. With a brief introduction, it presents prominent figures in contemporary theory, such as Freud, Marx, Nietzsche, and Deleuze, alongside twenty-six main thinkers from Adorno to Žižek, for the reader's consideration. The central question of the research will be to determine the significance of this book focused on the theory of art history and aesthetics. Information from the text will be gathered through documentary collection and analyzed descriptively and analytically, thus employing a qualitative research approach. Consequently, the primary objective of the research is to identify the importance and distinctiveness of this book in comparison to other works in this field and to explore the relationship between the theory of art history and the philosophy of art.
The research findings indicate that art history and theoretical discourse in art are intertwined. These two elements have coexisted alongside each other since ancient times and play a significant role in the interpretation and evaluation of artistic works, thereby providing further justification for the forthcoming study. Moreover, a better understanding of art and its role in societies is achieved through theoretical discussions in art history.
